I Hope to Make a Difference and a Challenge!

Hi folks! Gee, I can't believe it's been 2 weeks since my last post. Here's what's been going on!

I have been unemployed for the last 2 years - thanks to the economy! I decided after many years in business to change my career and follow my dream. I went back to school at the tender age of 45 (I'm way over that now!) to get my bachelors and masters degrees. I was a library aide for about 2 years and then I got my dream job, taught for a few years only to be bumped. In education it's last in, first out! In my free time I have been pursuing a 2nd masters in library education.

I took a job as a library media specialist on the 19th and I was in orientation (un-paid) all week. This is what I was going to do! And you folks think librarians don't have a sense of humor!

Well, I resigned on Friday morning, after I was offered another teaching position in the district I was laid off from! It was all a matter of economics. The job was a quarter of the commute and more money, plus I liked the district!

Now I'll be a classroom teacher, and I'm so happy! Thank you to all the parents who trust me with their children's education and their well being! I can't wait to make a difference!

I went to a catholic school, and I had some really cool nuns who I learned a lot from, especially my 5th grade nun, Sr. Mary Coleman.  I learned genuine and heartfelt kindness from her!

Challenge

Who was your favorite teacher? What did you learn from them?

  2. What a hoot! As president of our library board of trustees, I'd love to spice things up for our new library--under construction!! I'll have to share this with our employees.

    Enjoy your new teaching job.

    Best,
    Bonnie

  3. It's funny, I'm 35, was a sahm, and now trying to figure out what I'm going to do. So, I'm thinking preschool teacher or librarian. I worked at academic libraries in college, but am worried about going for my degree as jobs are so scarce around here. Good luck and congrats!

  5. As my oldest and dearest friend, and by oldest I mean in how long I have known you not your chronological age LOL. You are going to change your students lives in more ways than you will ever know. Lucky are the kids who get you for their teacher. I also had nuns my whole live and I really do not have any horror stories like so many people do. I had several wonderful teachers. Sr. Diane who taught us all that it was ok to be different, she use to be a hippie(We had rabbits in the classroom that roamed free during class) Sr. Kathleen Joan (she made kindness seem so natural that you wanted always to be kind)and Sr. Mary Frances (who had a wonderful sense of humor and knew that sometimes kids in the classroom just have to laugh and their bodies just need to move).

  6. Hello Mary:
With your wicked sense of humour and an ability to see the funny side of life, we just know that you will be a wonderful classroom teacher. We have both spent many years teaching and can think of no more noble a profession. Every day is different and there is nothing like the sense of schievement when you move forward the frontiers for young people. Go for it and enjoy!!

I'll never forget my favorite teacher, my 7th grade science teacher who encouraged me to be myself and do whatever I want in life. Can't wait to hear how you enjoy your new class!

  11. Oh, happy day! Congrats on getting your 'dream job'! Teachers are such an important part of kids' lives! My favorite teacher was Mrs. Lyons, my first grade teacher, who always had a lap for an insecure child, a smile and pat on the back for encouragement, and star stickers that shown bright on our hardest work (regardless of whether is was perfect). She was a Goddess!

  12. Congratulations, will you be teaching in Maine? I attended a one room school house and Mrs. Byantha Doughty was the one and only teacher, she taught grades K-6 I have such fond memories of this incredible lady and my formative school years. I taught preschool for 18 years and wore many hats, as I am sure you can understand, Sometimes I wonder how Mrs. Doughty did all that she did do. Hope you are fairing well, sending greetings, Julie.

  14. How can I NOT leave a comment on a post about librarians? :-)
    Congratulations, Mary!

My favourite teacher was my first English teacher. He made learning a language so much fun, and taught us proper English from Day 1, not the toned-down version often heard in class rooms when the teacher is not a native speaker.

  16. Congratulations on your new job. I had many great teachers but the one that stands out in my mind was the worst one - Mrs. Trerice. I swear, if she had ever said a kind word or smiled - her face would have cracked. Lol So remember SMILE.

  21. Congratulations on your new job! Once upon a time I was a teacher too. I lost my wonderful position (last in, first out) and was sent to an awful school in an awful area where I lasted for about 3 years and quit. I don't think I'd have the patience any more so I respect your dedication!

  22. Congratulations on your new dream job! It's always good to have a job you love. My most favorite teacher was my second grade teacher, Miss Williams. Could that be why I love second grade the best? Have a great year! :)

  24. Congratulations Mary. I'm so pleased for you. I come from a long line of educators. Although I did not follow in their footsteps, I have the highest regard for teachers.

I learned the most from my high school English teacher.

  25. Mary,
I was just trying to catch up and saw this post. Congratulations! I hope you love it!

    The Gaga Librarians are hysterical.

My favorite teacher was the one who told me to get the hell out the field I was training for. (She did it more nicely than that.) She was right.
